What I am reading in June
June is almost at the end and I want to share with you what I have been reading this month.
In May I went for a quick trip to Barcelona and didn’t miss a stop at Gigamesh, the biggest fantasy bookshop in Europe. If you have never been there, I can say it definitely is worth a visit. Among stunning covers and unique editions, they also have a nice section of books in English, so I bought many interesting titles there.
One of them is “Tress of the Emerald Sea” by Brandon Sanderson. It is the first book of the author I read. I’m still at the beginning of the story, page 35 to be precise, and I am already enjoying it.
Then, June is the month of the year when I usually re-read “Writing Down the Bones” by Natalie Goldberg. I can’t exceed saying I love that book. It has been the first title about writing I bought, and I am so grateful for having it on my bookshelf. Every time it is such an inspiration to me. The author’s words always taste as a safe place and seem to cheer me on expressing my creativity.
And… nothing else. These two are the books I am currently reading for the month. I know there are people who read five, or six, or even more books per month. But that’s not my case. I write and read at my own pace. Sometimes could be three books, other times just one, it depends on many things. Quantity is not the point, treasuring what I experience reading and writing is the point.
For example, I read “The Ocean at the End of the Lane” by Nail Gaiman once, and it warmed my heart so much, it filled my imagination and my soul for so long that I had been totally concentrated on that book for a long period. And it was amazing. I think I will remember that story for the rest of my life. That is what I mean for treasuring the experience.
I know myself enough to know that if I set a goal to read -let’s say- four books in a month, I will read none. That is not how my brain works. I need to read a story and dive into it, explore it, cry for it, laugh between the lines, appreciate single words. And it takes its own time for every book, because each story is different.
